&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; A rock is a perfect metaphor, an allegory in volume. When placed it’s sculptural limits beget a kind of artistic proposition — and when considered with reduced anthropomorphism and ungeologically — produce a ready-made analog to the causation and bounds of our attempts at the understanding of all things. 


Here the sculptor has made no concessions; no attempts to curry favor with curators or collectors — pieces wholly outside discourse. And if pressed for an affiliate movement for these “sculptures” (i.e. Cubism, Mannerism, etc.)… perhaps Monism or Cosmogonism? Definitely not Conceptualism or Pataphysics — Actualism?


The analog? Well for sure it is 1:1. Weird; yes — a knot to be admired for it’s curves — not for untying. An emergent surface as thick as it’s mass.&#38;nbsp;

&#38;nbsp; 
Were it possible for the instances of our minds or world events&#38;nbsp;to be mapped and dimensionally materialized, something similar to a rock would appear — areas of smoothness yielding to pockmarked particularities, density shifts and feathered explosions. What really is the shape of a boom town? A pilgrim’s journey? A section of jungle mayhem? A boring era? The silhouette of a father’s cold slap? The contours of a brief, intense friendship? Comfortably we perceive all of these things as ready to be integrated into ledgers or novels or timelines; but really they are queer crags and striations of unimaginable idiosyncrasy.


So yes, the reflective, reasonable yield of our mind has much symmetry (computation, cataloguing, narrativizing, etc.) but it’s actual shape is no shape, but unfolding chaos and singularity visible only to our particular time-scale. Our species-wide symmetries and quantizations are basically improvisations white-labeled onto directionless infinitude attempting the constant creation of navigable Dimension.


So, look intimately at a rock, walk around it, get up close to it, savor it’s complexion and composition as you would any painting or temple and see it as the faultless mirror that it is — a truly perfect sculpture.

 Marc Henry’s 12-piece series flirts with the fine line between the Eros
(pleasure principle) and the Thanatos (death drive). These fine lines blur and
swell into troubling, viscerally attractive forms nascent of the unheimlich,
or familiar strangeness. The canvas becomes, at times, a study into the
sensuality of material, touch, and texture. Gloved hands caress bounded feet,
ringed fingers wrench apart a dog’s jaw, a fluoresced bat gets fed by a crow.
We are presented with spaces between delicacy and destructiveness, the
bodily and the sanitised, the pleasurable and the strange. Confronted with the
suggestive insides of an oyster, the fragile perilousness of a morning star
made of glass, and the Orwellian uneasiness of retractable car cameras, Henry
presents a critical study of the floating mysteriousness of the real, the
sensual, the compulsion, and the imaginary. 


Behind each painting lies a detailed process of digital research. Henry
selects his subjects from a self-produced digital archive of images circulating
the internet and deep web. Scenes from films and newsfeeds, they could be
moments we un-consciously recall in our cognitive archives formed through
mass-media consumption and compulsive image digestion. Each digital image is
dissected and analysed in photoshop to be translated into oil paint. Indeed, in
quantity and sequence, the works become a kind of feed in themselves, emerging
from their origins in Henry’s process of digital archiving as a research
technique for painting. 


The translation between the digital image and the tactile painting in
itself suggests a new kind of psycho-somatic pleasure principal characteristic
of the digital age. Is cognitive-techno capitalism driven by the floating
objects of desire? Daily interaction with ‘contemporary tele-techno
masturbators’[1](smartphones), the caress of skin against the aluminosilicate glass of a phone
screen, the mini-orgasms of notification-temporality and numbing boredom of
newsfeed passivity are indirectly reflected in Henry’s studies of the sensual
significance of translation – and of the between, in all of its contours.&#38;nbsp;

“Postmodernism, postmodern consciousness, may then
amount to not much more than theorizing its own condition of possibility, which
consists primarily in the sheer enumeration of changes and modifications.”

The German saying, ‘der
Schein trügt’ defines a dichotomy in which something, once revealed,
defies its original impression and therefore deceives. The initial assumption
of the subject/object is made based off its first impression or surface-layer
(whether conceptual or aesthetic), its shell: ‘All
that glitters is not gold’. 


In his solo exhibition Tender Offer, Marc Henry’s paintings reveal
such tensions, drawing from the ever-proliferating peripheries of authenticity,
inauthenticity and their mystification within our day-to-day relentless hyper
capitalist machine. Revealing fragments of our strange postmodern reality, his
works establish deceptive innuendos by exploring controversies in our current
wellness, luxury and consumerist economy or by referencing historicised iconic
cultural emblems such as the ancient relic the sphinx of Giza and Greek
mythology such as Achilles. With an array of assertive steel-framed oil
paintings at arm’s length, we bite the
bullet and face fragments of a nuanced pastiche that reflect our idiosyncratic
postmodern condition, or as critical theorist Frederic Jameson reiterates, ‘the
cultural logic of late capitalism.’ [1]


We are reminded of Baudrillard’s
Simulacra and Simulation, in which cultural tools of representation (both
virtual and physical) ‘simulate’ our
lived experiences when confronted with The Sphinx and Pyramid Scheme.For the technical process behind this work, Henry uploads an image found online
of The Sphinx of the Seashore (1879) by Elihu Vedder, based on the statue of
the Great Sphinx of Giza in Egypt constructed in around 2500 BC. He then edits
this image within the
programme DALL-E developed by OpenAI. This artificial intelligence generates
digital images from language descriptions named ‘prompts.’ Infinitely
removed from its original context, the reproduced image becomes obsolete – its
authenticity called into question. Yet, by transferring the final rendition
onto the canvas with thick, expressionistic oil strokes and framing the work
with stainless steel, Henry solidifies its mutated presence in real-time, in
the here and now. Before us is its sheer haptic corporeality.

condemns consumer culture by building on the critique of commodity fetishism in
Marx, asserting that ‘All that once was
directly lived has become mere representation.’[2] Images circulating, proliferating and flowing through
time within networks of capital are constantly disseminated, reconfigured,
enhanced, adapted or replaced. Within the free flow of information, images
become endless amorphous mutations that dextrously foreshadow signs and symbols
aimed at the consumer yet also bring into question the authenticity and power
or impact of an image. 


Such is apparent in I Am Perpetually Haunted By a
Future That Could Have Been, which depicts a mask that was initially welded
and posted on a blog by an unknown welder living in eastern Europe, that was
subsequently mistaken for being an authentic thirteenth-century bishop’s
mask on twitter and subreddits. The image proliferated online across countless
blogs and platforms until it was fallaciously historicised as it was published
on multiple acclaimed history platforms on an international scale. Henry’s
incorporation of photoshop and DALL-E further quantified and multiplied the
initial image, with the final rendition translated into painterly form across
the canvas. We are confronted with an arrangement of artificially generated
masks whose eerie glitches remain captured in its expressionistic, physical,
and painterly form. 


The original rare ivory and diamond coated Russian
Fabergé eggs
symbolise ‘high-end’ luxury
and have been swallowed up and incorporated into mainstream culture on a
multifaceted scale, stressing ‘what the commodity
had already shown itself to be in the course of this conquest: a process of
quantitative development.’[3] In This Interregnum a Great
Variety of Morbid Symptoms Appear, captures an
online image of a 2008 Alexander McQueen ‘Fabergé egg purse’ which
Henry subsequently rendered, generated and multiplied using photoshop and
DALL-E. A photoshopped Venezuelan poodle moth furry in its texture sits amongst
the contrastingly flat and reflective concoction of AI simulated Fabergé eggs. 


Debord states that ‘the
spectacle grasped in its totality is both the result and the project of the
existing mode of production. It is not a supplement to the real world, an
additional decoration. It is the heart of the unrealism of the real society. In
all its specific forms, as information or propaganda, as advertisement or
direct entertainment consumption, the spectacle is the present model of
socially dominant life.’ Removed from its
original function, the play on words of the title of the work Weapons of
Mass Seduction, goes hand in hand with rendering the function of the object
obsolete: Its fragile medium depicted as glass stressing its ornamental and
alluring qualities. Contrasting tensions are further explored through the
painterly technique that is required in order to depict the opacity of glass
against the dense smoothly textured surface the object shines forth from. 


Tender Offer reflects on the ever-conglomerating late-capitalist
machine, our place within it and asks us to engage with what is beyond the
alluring surface of our day-to-day goings on. The power of the ever-mutating
dissemination of the image is further pulled into question, its absurdity made
apparent. In the cultural logic of the present, we are faced with an ongoing
uncomfortable truth: Nothing is what it seems, everything is but a pastiche and
“In a world which
really is topsy-turvy, the true is a moment of the false.”[4]

Dear Marc,


Sitting here in the heart of Vienna, with Munich to the west and London further along the way towards Lower Manhattan where Di Modica left his Charging Bull made of bronze on Broadway, in the image of the great golden calf those folks worshipped while daddy was up talking to God on Mount Sinai, way before there were any wolves on Wall Street.


Maybe things aren’t as belligerent as they were in the 80s, maybe now they’ve got it down to a sterile science. Since coming out of the dust bowls of the 20s, there doesn’t seem to be no room for cowboys, or bulls, or bears around these carefully constructed houses of cards. 


I’m not exactly sure how you must feel about Arturo’s great, glorious symbol of financial optimism. But judging by these paintings, you must have learned a thing or two and made a couple of observations about some of these more contemporary financial institutions while studying money in school back in Germany or up in Sweden.


Did they manage to pass on the same fatherly warnings of Hubris that Icarus ignored? What sort of instructions were given to those meant inherit the world as it stands, or rather teeters, as the credit lines max out and the divine debt collection begins to feel imminent. 
What were you doing, messing around, pushing pigments into canvas while you were meant to be learning about price controls and inflation; supply and demands and perfect and imperfect competition? God only knows it must be helpful to understand what a dollar’s worth and why when you’re busy giving objects value with your time, energy, and linseed oil.


Your Father might have been right to push his son towards an education in economics. And I wonder which is more ruthless - the trading floors at New York stock exchange or Danny Ritchter’s class full of young folks trying make it as artists. And I wonder if it even matters. And I wonder if it’s all the same at the schools for the economists and the ones for the artists. 


What’s the difference anyway, between the land of boom and bust and the modern market for Bildende Kunste. You know what they say about the rising tides and all the ships and the trickle down and the credit systems invented to explore the America’s and the ones invented there in the new world.. 


Let me propose a toasts; to the painters and the sculptors and everybody else who’s preoccupations result in the the creation of objects that can be bought and sold on the free and open market like war bonds and cobalt and carbon credits and big fancy flats in the Vienna’s historic first district. God bless it. 


So here's to the bullpens and the stretched linen, to the bear markets and the bold colors, and to finding value in the valueless, making sense of the senseless. It's all some sort of game anyway, and maybe that's the point – not to win, but to play, to participate in the good ol’ act of creation, whether it's with a brush or a banknote.


Looking forward to that bottle, who knows, maybe by the end of the night, we’ll have made heads or tails of the great casinos that have been built up on foundations of those magic little pocket-sized plastic pieces that seem to hold it all together at the moment, or at least have had enough wine to believe we have.

Marc Henry's visual worlds draw from image databases of the internet's depths and the artist's own photographs. Using various software, he layers, merges, and isolates parts of his findings, creating entirely surreal and almost eerie scenes, which serve as templates for his works. Painting on coarse linen allows him a partial loss of control over the application of oil, distancing both himself and the viewers from the subject and emphasising the works symbolic&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; content. The visual worlds created can be understood as a collective fiction, a hallucinatory space, entailing a&#38;nbsp;&#38;nbsp;self-reflection of the very act of painting itself. 

 
The content of Henry’s works primarily investigates emotions. The search for truth and meaning in life, as well as growing uncertainty amongst the younger generation, is present in many of his works. His work is to be understood not so much as a critique, but rather as a space for resonance. Here, painting evolves from the tradition of confident statements and rather offers reflection on specific ideas and emotions.

 
In this series, forest depictions appear for the first time in Henry’s oeuvre. The forest suggests the limited perspective of humans and connects the desire for belonging with the Romantic pursuit of universal knowledge in the early 19th century. This connection ultimately leads to the realisation that the drive for self-elevation, especially in our post-factual society, can lead to missteps. The series evolves from landscape views to interiors, where the artificiality of office spaces ("office-core") meets the emotional topography of film noir. At the same time, the perspective shifts from&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; societal analysis to introspection. The role of the individual, particularly that of the artist within social structures, moves to the foreground.

 
The Elevator (Dream Sequence) depicts a herd of sheep as a symbol of conformist group behaviour. The animals appear out of place, as if artificially inserted into their environment. One of the sheep has a seemingly human face, which feels distorted and unnatural, possibly generated by AI, and it appears to be the one most likely to resist the machinery of homogenising modern life. Underlying all of this is the concept of "play pretend” — a childlike behaviour in which we adapt to what we see around us, not because it aligns with our true selves but to mimic our environment. In this sense, the interior scenes in Henry's works, serving as symbols of the unnatural and imposed, can also be understood as deeply human survival strategies of individuals in the Capitalocene. Paintings like Skeptics Expect More Muted Growth I combine the capitalist machinery with the domestication of nature. The title refers to an oxymoron of stock market jargon, while the image depicts a cypress tree as tamed nature in a museum display case.

 
The blending of nature and office life recalls the absurd world of Jacques Tati's film Playtime as well as the landscape paintings of the Nabis artists like Pierre Bonnard, Paul Sérusier, or Félix Vallotton. Through the interplay of precision and indifference, Henry generates a unique visual language that skilfully addresses fundamental questions about &#38;nbsp;humanity and society through its dreamlike absurdity.

The
title of Marc Henry’s solo exhibition Theory of the Fine People at
Galerie Anton Janizewski refers to Thorstein Veblen’s The Theory of the
Leisure Class, first published in 1899.The American economist describes here the mechanism of
conspicuous consumption, in which luxury goods function as markers of social
distinction. Clothing, architecture, and art – all serve as visible codes of
separation for the “leisure class”.


Henry’s
paintings take up these codes and translate them into pictorial spaces that
appear familiar yet verge on the surreal. Elegant interiors, modernist
buildings, or burning architectural models provide the setting. Figures inhabit these spaces like stage characters –
more archetypes than individuals – their rigid gazes recalling Edward Hopper.
Some scenes resemble snapshots of everyday familiarity, while others are
charged with subtle tension: figures wear glasses or leather gloves that create
a sense of distance, and artificial lighting heightens the impression of
theatrical staging.


Central to
Henry’s work is the play between model and reality. He constructs digital
collages from an archive of photographs, architectural fragments, private
snapshots, and found footage from the internet. The architectures are composed
of mid-century motifs – glass facades, open floor plans, design classics – which establish familiar codes without making direct
references. Printed in A3 format, these collages serve as templates in which
scenarios are tested and arranged in advance.


Transferred onto canvas layer by
layer – on coarse linen whose texture imposes a certain loss of control,
reminiscent of the grain of analog film. Figures take on a peculiar rigidity, and
the paintings resemble stills.


The works appear
staged – and they are meant to. In The Architects II, for instance, two
figures lie beside a burning model, the tragedy of a prestige project condensed
into a single scene. This is intensified by a cinematic light, at times almost
Lynchian. Yet on closer inspection, the light betrays the illusion: shadows fall
unnaturally, spaces are overexposed – an effect that makes them appear like
dream sequences.


The series reflects on painting
itself – its role as a medium of representation, power, and wealth – while at
the same time responding to the fleeting image flows of the digital world from
which Henry draws. Elements of 1960s style blend with contemporary details,
making the scenes hard to pin down in time and deliberately staged, leaving an
undercurrent of unease. In this tension between the shiny layers of oil paint
and the fleeting nature of digital loops, painting reads as a metaphor for
Veblen’s theory of „conspicuous consumption“.


As Mark Fisher observed,
in late capitalism critique can hardly detach itself from the very structures
it criticizes. Theory of the Fine People makes this contradiction
visible: it is never quite clear whether one is looking at the model or already
at the building itself. And perhaps it is for that very reason that,
eventually, it all goes up in flames.

Marc Henry's paintings are full of references and at the same time fragmentary. They oscillate between reality and fiction, familiarity and obscurity. It is precisely these ambivalences, which characterize and dominate the image in the post-factual-digital age, that particularly interest the artist. He employs digital imaging and manipulation techniques as well as found footage, quoting art and architectural history, but also referring to his own work.


In The Summit / and II, Henry creates a scenery that tells of power and powerlessness throughout the ages.


It brings together sleeping or unconscious protagonists, Oscar Niemeyer's furniture for the headquarters of the French Communist Party from the 1960s, and Andrea Del Castagno's Last Supper from 1447.
